§ 13.20.030. Naming.

  • A.

    The city shall use the following process to name new parks and nature areas except for parcels where the city has accepted deed restrictions that include naming provisions:

    1.

    Solicit public input for name suggestions; then

    2.

    Review the suggestions and select those that meet the criteria listed in subsection B of this section; then

    3.

    Present the suggestions to the parks and recreation advisory board; then

    4.

    The parks and recreation advisory board shall select one name to recommend to council; then

    5.

    The parks and recreation advisory board and city staff shall jointly present the recommendation to council; then

    6.

    The city council may consider the recommendation for confirmation, and shall set a name by resolution.

    B.

    The city council shall name the public land for a landmark, feature, or habitat in the vicinity of the facility or public land site, or a person or family. For a public land to be named after a person or family one or more of the following must be met:

    1.

    Has displayed outstanding, long-term civic commitment and made significant contributions to the betterment of the community;

    2.

    Has contributed service to the community above and beyond normal;

    3.

    Has made noteworthy contribution to the development and improvement of public land and recreation activities in this community;

    4.

    Has been prominent in the history of the development of the City of Longmont, Boulder County, or Weld County;

    5.

    Is worthy of public commemoration;

    6.

    Has performed acts of state or national significance;

    7.

    Has homesteaded or was owner of the public land property; or

    8.

    Has contributed significant funds for the specific public land, or for public lands and recreation in general.
